Моё мини-интервью с Майклом А. Стэкполом
1. The word "Rogue" has many meanings in English and still more in translation from English into Russian.
And what does word "Rogue" mean for you in term "Rogue Squadron"?
The designation Rogue happened because the pilots were part of Red Squadron in the first film. Often in American units, the designator or call-sign is chosen by the flight leader. The shift from Red to Rogue came because it keeps the same initial sound (R), and Rogue is a cool word. (I recently talked with one of our Air Force pilots, and when she leads a flight, she chooses call signs from Star Wars and, not surprisingly, often picks Rogue.)
As for the meaning of Rogue--here it is used in the sense of the cavalier or pirate, meaning fierce fighters who are working outside authority. This is certainly how they would have been viewed by the Empire, and the pilots would have enjoyed that bit of irony.
2. There is great dispute about meaning of word "Squadron" in term "Rogue Squadron"?
One group is insisting upon that "Squadron" is cavalry unit (as metaphor),
other group is insisting upon that "Squadron" is air force (space force) unit.
These two meanings have different interpretation in Russian, and only one variant can exist in translation of SW-books from English into Russian.
Which group is more right?
In this case, squadron is definitely chosen from the airforce/aerospace
unit. You're looking for the word that best applies to a group/unit of twelve fighters working together.
3. What does the word "Halcyon" mean for the name "Kieran Halcyon" (aka Corran Horn) and other Halcyons?
There is dispute about its meaning with many parties:
a) it doesn't mean anything ? it's just a fine word;
b) it's allusion to the bird "kingfisher" (aka "halcyon");
c) it show the calm and peaceful nature of Corran Horn.
I liked the sound of the word, and was pushing mostly toward the
calm/peaceful nature for a Jedi. Corran is really anything BUT calm and peaceful, but it was a clue toward the direction he needed to travel. It was, after all, his grandfather's last name. Ultimately, were I to write another book, we'd probably see him moving more toward adopting that family name as his bloodline became fully Jedi.
4. There is another great dispute about meaning of name for "Errant Venture"?
The words "Errant" and "Venture" have many variants of translation from English into Russian.
Why you (and Booster Terrik ;-) ) had named it like this? What does this name must mean?
Ah, as I joked with the folks at Lucasfilm at the time, Booster really should have called his ship Free Enterprise, but Enterprise was already taken. It was in this sense, however, that Errant Venture is meant: Booster is a free operator, with no one as his boss. The idea fits Booster's nature, the sense of how he got the ship, and what he does with it in subsequent books.
